Baume & Mercier was founded under the name “Frères Baume” in 1830 by brothers Louis-Victor and Célestin Baume, who opened a watchmaking shop in Les Bois, a town in the Swiss canton of Jura. In 1921, this Swiss watch manufacturer expanded internationally by opening a branch in London called “Baume Brothers”, which led to its expansion throughout the British Empire.
In 1918, the company’s director, William Baume, partnered with Paul Mercier to found “Baume & Mercier” in Geneva. The company specialized in the manufacture of wristwatches, mostly models with unusual “designs” that did not follow traditional round shapes. In 1919, Baume & Mercier received the Geneva Seal, the international quality certification par excellence for Haute Horlogerie.
During the “Roaring Twenties”, the brand supported the emancipation of women. During the 1940s, Baume & Mercier launched several collections of modern women’s watches, most notably the Marquise collection.
Baume & Mercier introduced in the 1970s designer watches such as, for example, the Galaxie and Stardust models. In 1973, Baume & Mercier introduced the Riviera model, one of the world’s first steel sports watch models.
Today, the brand offers the Clifton, Classima and Hampton collections for men and women; the Capeland collection for men, and the Linea and Promesse collections for women.
